Pheromone Monitoring Lure for Lymantria dispar, Gypsy Moth

Gypsy Moth (Lymantria dispar) is mainly confined to broad leaf hosts. It is a serious pest of trees and shrubs with a preference for oaks. Other hosts include hornbeam, beech, chestnut, birch and poplar. Outbreaks of gypsy moth larvae can result in severe defoliation, leading to reduced growth and vigour of the affected trees. In addition, the larvae have urticating hairs, which can cause severe allergic reactions. It has one generation of per year in most countries.

Description

Directions for Use

The Funnel Trap is recommended for this insect. The traps should be placed in the forest before the first moths normally appear and maintained till the end of the flight period. This is normally between June and September in the northern hemisphere. It should be noted that the exact time of insect emergence will vary with location and seasonal variation. The traps should be suspended from the lower branches of the tree and placed at head height. One trap should be sufficient to monitor up to 10 hectares. It is not necessary to change lures during any one flight period. The Funnel Traps should be emptied regularly to avoid the trap filling and repelling flying insects from putrefaction of the insects caught. Frequency of data recording is dependent on population size but it is recommended that catches be recorded every 7 – 10 days.

Please note that both L. dispar and L. monacha are attracted by the same pheromone (two species use very specific isomers of the same component and the pheromone can fairly isomerise into the other form) and both can be caught in the same trap in areas of mixed broadleaf and conifer woodlands. The Flex Lure includes better UV protectants which are not as effective in a rubber septum. To avoid affecting the efficiency of the trapping system it is strongly recommended that traps be used for only the one species. Never use the lures for other species in this trap.
