Pheromone Monitoring Lure for Mamestra brassicae, Cabbage Moth

This is a serious pest of cabbage and other crucifers as well as a wide array of other plants. Larvae feed on plant leaves with some larvae showing a preference for tunnelling into the cabbage hearts. Faecal fouling of the vegetable may be more important than actual damage. Even small populations can be very damaging. There are 2 generations per year in most countries.

Description

Directions for Use

The Delta Trap is recommended for this insect when populations are low. When populations are high the Funnel Trap is recommended. Place traps in the field by mid April and continued till mid October. The exact time of insect emergence will vary with location and seasonal variation. Traps should normally be attached to stakes at crop height and placed within the crop with at least 50m between each trap. One trap should be sufficient to monitor up to 5 to 10 hectares of a uniform field. In the case of small or non uniform plots, 1 trap per hectare is recommended. A minimum of two traps should be used regardless of the field size. Lures should be changed every 6‐8 weeks or earlier. The sticky inserts of the Delta Trap should normally be changed when the lures are changed.

In situations where high insect catches or dusty conditions have led to the deterioration of the glue surface the inserts should be changed. At each reading, the trapped insects and any other debris be removed and the glue stirred. The Funnel Traps should be emptied weekly to avoid the trap filling and repelling flying insects from putrefaction of the insects caught. The toxicant strips should be changed when lures are changed. Catches should be recorded weekly in low populations but more frequently in fields with high populations. The following species are occasionally caught in these traps: Dicestra trifolii, Hoplodrina ambigua, Ochropleura plecta, Mythimna unipuncta. To avoid affecting the efficiency of the trapping system it is strongly recommended that traps be used for only the one species. Never use the lures for other species in this trap.
