Pheromone Monitoring Lure for Cydalima (=Diaphania) perspectalis, Box Tree Moth

Cydalima perspectalis (synonyms Diaphania and Glyphodes perspectalis) is a pest of Buxus originating from Asia, reported for the first time in 2007 in Europe. The pale yellow flattish eggs are laid sheet-like, overlapping each other on the underside of box leaves. Newly hatched larvae are greenish-yellow, with black heads, reaching up to 4cm in length with a green/yellow body with thick black and thin white stripes. Pupae are concealed in a cocoon of white webbing spun among leaves and twigs. The adult moth (4cm across) usually has white wings
with a faintly iridescent brown border, although the wings can be completely brown or clear.

The larvae eat box leaves and produce webbing over their feeding area. Plants may also show patches of dieback which may be especially apparent on trimmed plants. This is not to be confused with dieback caused by the disease known as box blight. In China, 3 to 4 generations per year have been observed with 6 to 7 larval instars.

Description

Directions for Use

Funnel Traps are preferred for Box Tree Moth. (Large or Mini Traps can be use depending on seriousnes of infestation and whether aim is to monitor or trap. Funnel traps should be part filled with water and a few drops of liquid detergent can be added to break the water tension. Sentomol Box Tree Moth pheromone lures contain all the components of the sex pheromone to attract adult males. Placing the species specific pheromone inside the trap, adult male moths are attracted to this scent and become trapped. This process can reduce mating and egg laying leading to a reduction of future generations of caterpillars. Each lure and trap combination covers an area of 180 square meters. Place traps from March/April until October. The exact time of insect emergence will vary with location and seasonal variation. Place traps more than 20 meters apart. Traps can be reused over many seasons. The pheromone relaease from the polymer vial lasts up to 7 weeks. Change between 5-7 weeks.
