This is a major pest of grape vines throughout northern Europe. Further south it is gradually replaced by Lobesia botrana as the major pest. Larvae feed on inflorescences and later on the grape berries causing direct loss and promoting fungal rots. There are typically two generations per year.

Description

Directions for Use

The Delta Trap is recommended for this insect. The traps should be placed before the first moths normally appear and maintained till the end of the season. This is normally between mid April to late September. Exact time of insect emergence will vary with location and seasonal variation. The traps should be mounted on wooden stakes or attached to the vine support wires and located centrally within the vineyard with at least 50m between each trap. A minimum of two traps should be used regardless of the field size. Lures should be changed every 6‐8 weeks or earlier. The sticky inserts should normally be changed when the lures are changed.

In situations where high insect catches or dusty conditions have led to the deterioration of the glue surface the inserts should be changed. At each reading the trapped insects and any other debris should be removed and the glue stirred if practical. Catches should be recorded weekly in low populations but more frequently in orchards with high populations. The traps may also attract male Lobesia botrana which can be identified from the dark brown forewings compared to the light coloured forewings of E. ambiguella. To avoid affecting the efficiency of the trapping system it is strongly recommended that traps be used for only the one species. Never use the lures for other species in this trap.
