Methyl Eugenol insect attractant for Bactrocera (Dacus) dorsalis, B. Zonata and others

Methyl Eugenol is a highly attractive kairomone to the Oriental Fruit Fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) but it is also attractive to a number of other species of tephritid fruit flies. Care should be taken in identifying the species caught. To avoid affecting the efficiency of the trapping system it is strongly recommended that traps be used for only one species. Never use the same traps for other species.

Description

Directions for Use

Methyl Eugenol can be used in liquid form, alone or in combination with other liquid attractants, such as Cuelure, to attract fruit flies. Methyl Eugenol can also be formulated into attractant plugs or dispensers for use in fruit fly traps. Lastly, research work has demonstrated that Methyl Eugenol can be missed with insecticides and sprayed onto crops to provide an attract and kill solution. Consult your local agricultural advisory service for precise recommendations.

For trapping programmes, place the attractant into a Dome trap. The traps should be placed at head height on the outside of the tree canopy with at least 30m between each trap. Use traps at a density of 5 per hectare in small non uniform orchards and at a density of 2 per hectare in large uniform plantings. The traps should be placed in the orchard immediately before fruit formation. In countries where fruit flies are a quarantine pest, monitoring should be carried out all year round to detect new invasions. The Dome trap should be cleaned regularly and the attractant changed. Catches should be recorded weekly or more frequently in groves with high populations. Record the trap catch on a trap record sheet. Interpretation of catch records for timing control measures will vary from country to country.
