Pheromone Lure for Acrolepiopsis assectella, Leek Moth

A serious pest of leeks as well as onions, garlic and chives throughout Europe and extending through the temperate regions across to Asia. Once localised to the south and east coasts of the UK, this pest is now becoming far more widespread.

The larvae bore through developing leaves so that as the plant grows, the leaves merge with holes through them (shot-hole effect). The larvae also feed on the seed stalk preventing the formation of the seed and they also feed inside the hollow leaves of onions and sometimes bore down into the bulb.

Attack often encourages fungal rots which cause most of the damage. In warmer climates, there are 3 to 4 generations per year with over wintering insects emerging in April depending on country and latitude. There are two generations of caterpillars a year in the UK, in spring and late summer. The first attack is often mild, especially after a cold winter. The second one is the most damaging, and hot summers tend to favour the pest and make the problem worse.
