Lifecycle of the Horse Chestnut Leaf-miner
There can be up 5 generations of Cameraria per year. Adult moths appear from April onwards. They emerge in the early morning and fly to the tree trunks where they mate. From May to August eggs are laid along or near the lateral veins of the leaves on the upper epidermis. A female can produce on average 20-40 eggs. The eggs hatch after approx. 2 and 3 weeks. The larvae go through 5 stages of development, which takes up to 4 weeks to complete. During this time they feed on the inside of the leaves but the upper and lower epidermis remains intact. Pupae develop in a silken cocoon for approximately 2 weeks before they are fully developed however, the over-wintering generation can remain at this stage for 6 or 7 months. They are known to be very hardy and can withstand extreme cold and frost conditions. It is possible that the mines may be confused with a brown leaf mould or damage caused by salt. To be certain, the leaf should be held up to the light. If it is a Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner burrow, it will be possible to identify a larva, chrysalis, or at least larval frass.
Directions for Use
Funnel traps are recommended for Horsechestnut Leaf Miner. Place lure in basket and attach to underside of lid. Fill the base with a mix of water and detergent and hang in affected trees early in the year. Lures can be changed as necessary during the season. The base of the funnel trap can be removed easily to dispose of captured moths. Glue tree bands can also be placed around the trunks, stems and branches of trees to stop insects moving along the tree bark surface once they have emerged from the leaf litter.
